I recently recorded my very first podcast! When I say first, I have been featured in one before, but this was the first that I recorded myself. It is about networking- and I take the text from my blog post on the subject.
It covers what you need to do to be successful at networking before, during and after an event, with a particular emphasis on the charity sector.
I hope you enjoy it- apologies the sound quality isn’t perfect, I’m learning and experimenting. If you have any podcasts- on Soundcloud (the platform I’m using) or elsewhere- I’d love to hear them.
HI Alex – good first attempt! I’ll look forward to hearing more of these in the future. This topic is an interesting one for me. As an introvert (who is good at acting like an extrovert!) I find networking events very much out of my comfort zone. The funny thing is (and I hope this doesn’t sound arrogant) is that I actually think I’m good at it – I’m good at engaging people and asking them questions about themselves and what they do etc and I’ll happily go and (politely) interrupt a group conversation if I have to, yet I do find it very draining and hard work! I’m actually going to a networking event next week, one I haven’t been to before and one that will definitely make me feel anxious! But I’ll try and take on board some of your great tips and let you know how it goes!

Dear Fran- thanks for the lovely message! You don’t sound arrogant at all, just very self-aware. I think networking works best when the hosts have put thought into how it might happen- sometimes you go to an event and there is just something about the set-up or atmosphere which makes it difficult. Hope the tips help and good luck next week!
