I’ve read so many studies saying that meditation is good for you. Maybe one day I’ll find the time to look into it. But today I realized that coffee serves a meditative function for me.
Of course, I don’t mean that it zones me out. Coffee is, after all, a stimulant. But it provides some of the functions of meditation in my life.
Here’s why:
1- It provides a pause in my day.
2- It links whatever I am doing to past experiences: after all, I have drunk coffee many times.
3- It makes me think outside my immediate situation. I think about things such as where the coffee is grown, what machine has been used to make it, how it compares to other coffee I have had etc.
4- For a moment, however brief, I am just focused on that cup of coffee and nothing else.
5- It makes me feel part of something bigger than myself. Coffee is a global product. The people who ‘invented’ it, who are best at producing it and best at serving it, are different people from different countries.
So, what is your, (non-traditional) form of meditation?
